Rogers began his hockey career playing with the Niagara University Purple Eagles. Rogers scored the game-winning goal in the 2008 CHA Tournament Championship, giving Niagara a 3-2 victory over Bemidju State on March 16, 2008. Due to his efforts in that tournament, Rogers was named to the CHA All-Tournament Team. With the victory, Niagara advanced to the 2008 NCAA Tournament Regionals, but were eliminated by Michigan.
In his third season with the Purple Eagles, Rogers played 34 games, and established collegiate career highs with 10 goals, 13 assists and 23 points. In three seasons with the Purple Eagles, Rogers played 97 games and collected 18 goals and 22 assists for 40 points, along with 89 minutes in penalties.
Rogers was signed to an entry level contract by the Toronto Maple Leafs on March 29, 2008. Rogers was sent to the Maple Leafs AHL affiliate, the Toronto Marlies. The 2008-09 AHL season marks Roger's rookie season in professional hockey.
